P3 multiplication and division

In a division word problem, the hard part is not the dividing, it is knowing what to do with the leftover. Most marks here are lost by giving the quotient and ignoring the remainder. Here is how to read it.

What changes at P3

In Primary 3, your child learns the multiplication tables, multiplies and divides by a single digit, and meets division that does not come out even, leaving a remainder. The tables are drill; the remainder is where the thinking starts.

The skill that carries the marks is not the division itself, it is reading what the leftover means. Sometimes you round up, sometimes the remainder is the answer, sometimes you drop it. The question decides, not habit.

The sentence that costs the mark

A school trip has 53 children, and each bus holds 10. How many buses are needed?

What the working usually does

Takes the quotient and ignores the remainder. But the 3 leftover children are still standing at the kerb.

What the question asked

round up5 R 3=6 buses

The 3 left over still need a bus, so one more is needed. Five buses would leave them behind.

The division 53 ÷ 10 = 5 R 3 is correct in both columns, so nothing looks careless. The mark turns on what the remainder means: three children with no seat still need a bus. Read what the leftover has to do, then decide whether to round up.

Five buses carry 10 children each. The last 3 children still fill a sixth bus, so 6 buses are needed, not 5.

The same question, worked properly

  1. Divide into equal groups

    53 ÷ 10 = 5 R 3

    Ten children to a bus. 53 ÷ 10 is 5 full buses with 3 children left over. The division is the easy part.

  2. Read what the remainder means

    This is the step that fails. The 3 leftover children cannot be left behind, so they need a sixth bus. Answering 5 leaves them at the kerb. This is exactly where the mark is lost.

  3. Round up to the answer

    6 buses

    Five full buses, plus one more for the last 3, is 6 buses. The remainder decided the answer, not the division.

How can you tell it has clicked?

Give a sharing problem that does not divide evenly, like 53 children into buses of 10. If they answer 5 and stop, ask where the last 3 children go. A child who reaches for a sixth bus has understood it.

The tell is whether they check the leftover before writing the answer. A child who reads 5 R 3 as just 5 is dividing correctly but has not finished the question.

One thing to try tonight

Use a real packing job: 53 snacks, 10 to a bag, how many bags? Count the bags out and watch the last 3 snacks demand a whole extra bag. The leftover is the question, not an afterthought.

Whenever a division leaves a remainder, ask one thing: what happens to the bit left over? That single question turns a correct division into a correct answer.
