K2 to P1
Preparing for Primary 1 Maths in Singapore: K2 to P1
The short version
By the end of K2, MOE's preschool goals ask a child to count reliably up to at least 10 things, compare two groups of up to 10, and recognise the four basic shapes. Primary 1 Maths in Singapore starts from there, with Numbers to 10, Addition and Subtraction within 10, Shapes, and Ordinal Numbers and Position in Term 1. Term 1 starts on 4 January 2027.

K2 to P1 Maths: questions parents ask
What does Primary 1 Maths teach in Term 1?
Numbers to 10, Addition and Subtraction within 10, Shapes, and Ordinal Numbers and Position. Term 1 starts on 4 January 2027. The P1 syllabus page lists every topic, term by term.
What is the K2 Maths syllabus in Singapore?
MOE sets numeracy goals for preschools in its Nurturing Early Learners (NEL) framework rather than a topic list. By the end of K2 they include: "Rote count to at least 20", "Name the parts that form the whole in a quantity of up to 10 (e.g., 5 is made up of 2 and 3, and 1 and 4)", "Recognise numbers in numerals and in words", "Compare the quantities of two sets of up to 10 things each and use “same as”, “more than”, “fewer than” and “less than” appropriately", and "Recognise the four basic shapes (i.e., circle, square, rectangle and triangle)". Each goal is on this page, in MOE's words.
When does Primary 1 start in 2027?
The 2027 school year starts on 4 January 2027, the first day of Term 1 in MOE's school terms. The December holidays before it run from 21 November 2026.
Must my child know how to add and subtract before Primary 1?
No. P1 teaches adding and taking away within 10 from the first term. What helps is counting objects one by one and knowing that 5 is made up of 2 and 3, which MOE's preschool goals already cover.
How can I tell if my child is ready for P1 Maths?
Ask your child to count 10 toys, then the same toys in a messy pile. A child who is ready counts each toy once and gets 10 both times. Then ask which of two small groups has more.
Should I teach my child multiplication before P1?
There is no need. P1 meets multiplication later in the year, with pictures and equal groups. Counting, comparing and number bonds within 10 matter far more in the first weeks of school.
Are assessment books needed before P1?
Not for maths. MOE's own preschool guidance says assessing young children "is not about sitting children down to complete worksheets or tasks". Games with real objects teach counting better at this age.
