P5 properties of triangles
The rule is one line: the angles of a triangle add to 180°. The marks are lost on an isosceles triangle, where the leftover after the apex has to be shared between two equal base angles, not kept as one.

What changes at P5
At Primary 5, triangles get sorted by their sides and angles: equilateral (three equal sides, every angle 60°), isosceles (two equal sides, two equal base angles), and scalene (all different). Your child uses these properties, with the 180° angle sum, to find unknown angles.
The rules are easy to recite. The difficulty is reading the figure, because the question rarely says "isosceles". The child has to spot the tick marks on the equal sides and remember that equal sides force two equal base angles.
The sentence that costs the mark
An isosceles triangle has an apex angle of 40°, and its two equal sides carry matching tick marks. Find one of the base angles.
What the working usually does

Takes the whole leftover as a single base angle. It forgets that the equal sides mean two equal base angles that share the 140°.
What the question asked
half of180° − 40°=70°
Shares the leftover between the two equal base angles: 140° ÷ 2 = 70°. The tick marks on the equal sides are what say there are two of them.
Both start from the angle sum and both land on a real angle. The step that decides the mark is invisible in the arithmetic: whether the child read the tick marks as two equal angles to halve the remainder between.

Take the apex from 180°
180° − 40° = 140°The three angles of any triangle add to 180°. Take off the 40° apex, and 140° is left for the two base angles together.
Share it between the two
140° ÷ 2 = 70°This is the step that fails. The 140° belongs to two equal base angles, so halve it. This halving is the step the marks turn on, and the one most working skips.
State the reason
base angles equal, angle sum = 180°The MOE mark is for the property, not just the 70°. Write it: base angles of an isosceles triangle are equal, and the angle sum is 180°.
How can you tell it has clicked?
You do not need to do the angle maths to check this. When a triangle has tick marks on two sides, ask one thing: how many equal angles does that make, and did you share the leftover between them?
A child who understands says two equal base angles, and halves. A child who takes the whole leftover as one angle has missed what the tick marks were telling them, which is the most common way this mark is lost.
One thing to try tonight
Fold a rectangular sheet of paper corner to corner and cut along the fold. The two halves are identical, and their matching corners are equal. Equal sides force equal angles, felt in the hand.
Point at a triangle in the homework and ask which sides carry matching ticks. Then ask how many equal angles that makes. Getting to two, before any subtracting, is the habit that saves the mark.
