P5 parallelogram, rhombus and trapezium

Quadrilaterals are where a real rule gets applied to the wrong pair. A parallelogram does have equal angles, so a child copies one angle onto the one beside it. But neighbours are not equal, they add to 180°. Here is the slip.

What changes at P5

In Primary 5, quadrilaterals become about properties, not just names. Your child learns what makes a parallelogram, a rhombus and a trapezium, and uses those properties to find missing angles and sides.

A rhombus is a parallelogram with four equal sides; a trapezium has at least one pair of parallel sides. The properties are rarely written on the question, so the marks on the figure, the arrows and ticks, have to be read.

The sentence that costs the mark

A parallelogram has an angle of 70°. What is the angle next to it?

What the working usually does

same as70°=70°

Assumes the next angle is equal, the way the opposite one is. A parallelogram does have an equal pair, just not this pair.

What the question asked

180° −70°=110°

Consecutive angles add to 180°, so the angle next to the 70° is 180° minus 70°.

A parallelogram really does have equal angles, so copying the 70° feels right. But the equal pair is the OPPOSITE angles; the angle next to it is consecutive, and consecutive angles add to 180°. Both answers are real angles, so only knowing which pair is equal decides it.

The same question, worked properly

  1. Read the marks: it is a parallelogram

    opposite equal, consecutive add to 180°

    The arrows show both pairs of sides are parallel, so it is a parallelogram. That gives two rules: opposite angles are equal, and consecutive angles add to 180°.

  2. The next angle is consecutive, not opposite

    next angle → supplementary

    This is the step that fails. The angle beside the 70° is a consecutive angle, so it is supplementary, not equal. Copying the 70° applies the equal-angle rule to the wrong pair, which is the whole trap.

  3. Subtract from 180°

    180° − 70° = 110°

    Consecutive angles add to 180°, so the angle next to the 70° is 110°.

  4. Check the four angles

    70° + 110° + 70° + 110° = 360°

    The angles are 70°, 110°, 70°, 110°, the opposite pairs equal, and they sum to 360° as every quadrilateral must. It checks out.

How can you tell it has clicked?

You can check this without knowing the answer. Ask your child which angles in a parallelogram are equal. If they say the opposite ones, and that the neighbours add to 180°, they have it.

If they say the angle next to it is also 70°, they have applied a real rule to the wrong pair. Point at the opposite angle, not the neighbour, and the correction lands.

One thing to try tonight

Take a rectangular photo frame or box and push it so it leans into a parallelogram. As one corner opens wider, the corner next to it closes by the same amount.

The two always add to a straight line, 180°. Opposite corners stay matched; neighbours trade off. That is exactly what the angle rule is saying.

Parallelogram angle rules feed straight into the harder P6 geometry, where a figure combines a parallelogram with a triangle or a second quadrilateral and each property has to be read off the marks.

A child who reads the marks and picks the right pair rarely loses these angles. One who assumes all the angles match loses them whenever the shape is not a rectangle.
