PSLE score calculator AL score and posting group

Each subject's mark becomes an Achievement Level from 1 to 8, and the four ALs add up to a PSLE score from 4 to 32. A lower score is better, and it decides the posting group: 4 to 20 Posting Group 3, 23 to 24 Posting Group 2 and 26 to 30 Posting Group 1, with a choice of two groups at 21, 22 and 25.

How to calculate the PSLE score

Three steps. The calculator above runs the same three.

  1. Each subject's mark becomes an AL, 1 to 8

    AL 1 is the best. The bands are narrow at the top on purpose, so one careless mark does not cost a whole level.

    A Foundation subject grades A, B or C instead: A (75 to 100) counts as AL 6, B (30 to 74) counts as AL 7 and C (below 30) counts as AL 8.

    Your six school choices are all made inside one posting group, so the group decides which cut-off points to read.

A cut-off is a fact, not a forecast

It is the score of the last child posted in, published each May (2026 intake here). We never turn it into a probability. A percentage would be an invented number.

Ties have a fixed order

Citizenship first, then who ranked the school higher, then a computerised ballot. About 9 in 10 children never ballot at all.

Affiliation is first-choice only

It applies only when the affiliated school is ranked first, at least 20% of places stay open to everyone, and IP tracks carry no priority.

Questions parents ask about the PSLE score

Is a lower PSLE score better?

Yes. 4 is the best possible score, AL 1 in all four subjects, and 32 is the weakest. S1 posting places every score from 4 to 30.

How do Foundation subjects count?

A Foundation subject is graded A, B or C, and the grade counts as an AL in the total: A (75 to 100 marks) counts as AL 6, B (30 to 74 marks) counts as AL 7 and C (below 30 marks) counts as AL 8.

Does Higher Chinese add to the PSLE score?

No. The score is only the four standard subjects. A Higher Mother Tongue result counts in two other places: it can let a child take Higher Mother Tongue at Sec 1, and with a score of 14 or better, a Higher Chinese grade gives an edge when choosing a SAP school. The calculator checks both.

Which PSLE score is which posting group?

4 to 20: Posting Group 3. 21 to 22: Posting Group 2 or 3, your choice. 23 to 24: Posting Group 2. 25: Posting Group 1 or 2, your choice. 26 to 30: Posting Group 1. Above 30, MOE arranges the next step with the family directly.

Can I convert an old T-score into an AL score?

No. The T-score ranked a child against everyone who sat the exam, and it was last used in 2020. The AL score measures each subject against a fixed standard, so the two scales do not convert. Use this year's marks or ALs instead.
