P4 tables and line graphs

One habit saves the marks on tables: reading where the row and column cross, not grabbing the nearest number. Here is the slip, and how to check it at the kitchen table.

What changes at P4

In Primary 4, your child reads and makes tables and line graphs, pulling one specific number out of a grid full of them. Two-way tables, categories down the side and, say, days across the top, are where the marks quietly hide.

The skill is landing on the right cell. A table is full of real numbers, so a misread still gives a plausible-looking answer. You have to track both the row and the column to the point where they cross.

The sentence that costs the mark

A table shows the fruit sold each day, with a Total column. How many apples were sold on Tuesday?

What the working usually does

readsthe total=20

Grabs the Apples total, 20. It is a real number sitting in the Apples row, just not Tuesday's number.

What the question asked

readsthe crossing=12

Finds where the Apples row meets the Tuesday column and reads that one cell: 12.

Every cell holds a real number, so a wrong cell still returns something plausible, which is why nothing looks careless. Only tracking BOTH the row (apples) and the column (Tuesday) to where they cross lands the right one. A Total is a sum of the row, not a day.

The same question, worked properly

  1. Find the right row

    apples, so the Apples row

    Start with what the question is about, apples, and run along the Apples row. That fixes one direction.

  2. Then the column, and cross

    Apples row meets Tuesday column

    This is the step that fails. Now find the Tuesday column and read the cell where it meets the Apples row. Grabbing the Total column instead is exactly where the mark goes.

  3. Read where they meet

    apples on Tuesday = 12

    The cell at the crossing is 12. The Total, 20, is the whole week's apples added up, not Tuesday's, so it answers a different question.

How can you tell it has clicked?

Give them a two-way table and ask for one value, "apples on Tuesday". Watch the finger: does it trace the row and the column to the crossing, or grab the nearest number? The trace is the skill.

Ask what the Total column means. If they know it is the sum of the row, not a day, they will not confuse it with an answer.

One thing to try tonight

Use a bus or MRT timetable: "which train leaves Bishan at 9am?" needs the Bishan row AND the 9am column, read where they meet. Reading just the row, or a total, gives the wrong train.

Any grid works, a class timetable, a sports league table. Point at a cell and ask "which row and which column is this?" Naming both is the habit that stops the misread.
