P4 angles

A protractor carries two scales running opposite ways, and reading the wrong one turns a 60° angle into 120°. Here is how to pick the right scale every time, and check it at home.

What changes at P4

In Primary 4, angles stop being just "corners" and start being measured. Your child uses a protractor to read how many degrees wide an angle is, and to draw an angle of a given size. This is the first time angles are worked in degrees, not eyeballed.

The whole skill rests on one habit: lining the protractor up, then reading the right scale. A protractor carries two rows of numbers running opposite ways, so the same mark shows two values, and only one of them is the angle.

The sentence that costs the mark

An angle is measured with a protractor, its centre on the vertex and one arm resting on 0°. What is its size?

What the working usually does

Reads the scale that did NOT start at 0 on the arm. It is a real number printed right at the same mark, so the reading looks done.

What the question asked

Reads the scale that starts at 0 on the arm resting on the baseline. The two scales run opposite ways, so only this one counts up from your arm.

Both numbers, 60 and 120, sit at the very same mark, one on each scale, so nothing looks careless. The only check is which scale started at 0 on your arm, plus a glance: this angle is clearly smaller than a square corner, so it cannot be 120°.

The same question, worked properly

  1. Line the protractor up

    centre on the vertex, one arm along 0°

    The centre dot sits exactly on the corner, and the baseline lies along one arm.

  2. Read the scale that starts at 0

    the arm on 0° → read that scale = 60°

    This is the step that fails. The two scales run opposite ways. Read the one that begins with 0 on your arm, and ignore the other. Reading the far scale here gives 120°, which is where the mark goes.

  3. Sense-check against a right angle

    acute, so under 90°, giving 60°, not 120°

    A glance settles it: the angle is clearly smaller than a square corner, so it has to be under 90°. When the number and your eyes disagree, trust your eyes and switch scales.

How can you tell it has clicked?

Before your child reads a number, ask them to say whether the angle is acute or obtuse (smaller or bigger than a square corner). If they can name it, a wrong-scale 120° for an obviously small angle gets caught on the spot.

If they read a number straight off without that glance, that is where the mark goes. The two scales are the whole trap, and the fix is a one-second look before the reading.

One thing to try tonight

Point at any corner around the house, a door left ajar or an open book, and ask "more or less than a square corner?" before reaching for a protractor. Naming acute or obtuse first is the habit that catches a wrong-scale reading.

If you have a protractor, let them measure a few real corners. The slip almost always shows up as an obviously small angle reading over 90°, and spotting that mismatch is the skill worth building.

A child who sense-checks acute against obtuse here tends to catch their own slips later, when angles are calculated rather than measured and a wrong number is harder to notice.
