P4 symmetry
One picture trips most children up: a rectangle's diagonal, which looks like a fold line but is not. Here is why, and a one-second test you can do at the kitchen table.

What changes at P4
In Primary 4, a line of symmetry is a fold line: fold the shape along it and the two halves land exactly on top of each other. Your child finds these lines on shapes and completes symmetric figures on a grid.
The catch is that "cuts the shape into two equal pieces" is not the same as a line of symmetry. Equal size is about area; symmetry is about the halves matching when you fold. Those come apart on the very first shape most children meet, the rectangle.
The sentence that costs the mark
Is the diagonal of a rectangle a line of symmetry?
What the working usually does

Checks whether it makes two equal pieces. It does, two equal triangles, so this test says yes. It is the wrong test.
What the question asked
matches?diagonal=no
Folds the rectangle along the diagonal and checks whether the halves land on each other. They do not, because the rectangle is longer than it is wide.
The diagonal really does cut the rectangle into two equal triangles, so "equal halves" feels like proof. The only real test is the fold: the two halves have to land exactly on top of each other, and along a rectangle's diagonal they never do.

Fold along the line

Find the real lines
2 lines, through the midpointsA rectangle has exactly two lines of symmetry, each through the midpoints of a pair of opposite sides. Fold along either and the halves land perfectly.
How can you tell it has clicked?
Hand your child a rectangle of paper and ask them to fold it so the two halves match. They will fold it the short way and the long way, never corner to corner. That is symmetry, felt in the hands.
Then ask them to fold along the diagonal and look: the corners do not meet. A child who can see that the halves miss has understood that equal size is not the same as symmetry.
One thing to try tonight
Fold a rectangular piece of paper corner to corner. The edges do not line up, so it is not a line of symmetry. Now fold it the short way, then the long way, and both match perfectly. Folding is the test, not "two equal bits".
Try it on other shapes too, a square, a triangle, a letter of the alphabet. The rule stays the same every time: does it fold so the halves land exactly on each other?
