The written week

Four subjects for most children, across five mornings. The maths papers are on Friday 25 September, in the middle of the week.

Before and after the written week

Maths day is Friday 25 September

Both papers are sat in one morning. Paper 1 runs 8.15am to 9.25am with no calculator. Paper 2 runs 10.30am to 11.50am and a calculator is allowed.

The two papers carry the same 50 marks. That is the part worth knowing. Paper 1 is the shorter one, it comes first, and it is the one children tend to prepare for less. It decides half the grade.

Marking days, 12 to 14 October

Most primary schools close while teachers mark the papers, so P1 to P5 children are usually home for the three days. Each school decides for itself, so check the letter.

Term 4, and when the P3 to P5 papers fall

Term 4 runs Monday 14 September to Friday 20 November, straight after the September break (Saturday 5 to Sunday 13 September). Primary schools also have Children's Day on Friday 2 October.

The year-end paper is set by your school, not by SEAB. There is no national date for it. In most schools it lands in the last few weeks of term, and your school's assessment letter is the only document that has the real date.

What does not vary is the scope. The year-end paper covers the whole year, including the topics taught back in Term 1 that nobody has looked at since March.

Results, and the week after

Results are expected Tuesday 24 or Wednesday 25 November. SEAB confirms the exact day closer to the time, so treat it as the week rather than the date.

Then it moves fast. You get about a week from results day to submit six secondary school choices. That is not long to start thinking from a blank page, and most of the thinking can be done before results day, using prelim marks and last year's cut-off points.

Term 4 ends Friday 20 November, and the year-end holidays run Saturday 21 November to Thursday 31 December.
