Choosing help
Online maths tuition for primary school: which kind, and is it worth it?
The short version
Online maths help comes in five kinds: a live tutor one to one, a live group class, recorded lessons, question-bank apps, and practice with a tutor built in. A live tutor costs the same per hour online as at home (S$30 to S$90 for P4 to P6). StudyLah is the fifth kind: when an answer is wrong, Lah explains it out loud, step by step, at the moment it happens, free to start and S$34.90 a month for Premium.

- S$30–90 an hour

Lah on a real question: she says each step out loud and writes it on the card as she goes. Your child can replay any step.
What kinds of online maths tuition are there?
Five, and they do different jobs. Two are live lessons with a teacher at a fixed time. Three your child uses on their own, whenever they like.

- A live tutor, one to one. Best for a topic your child has never understood. Agencies charge the same per hour online as for a home visit: S$30 to S$90 for P4 to P6.1–5
- A live group class. Cheaper than one to one. One provider publishes S$50 for a 1.5-hour lesson of up to 4 children.6
- Recorded lessons. Good for seeing a method again, at any time. Nobody looks at your child's own working.
- Question-bank apps. Good for repetition. But nobody explains your child's own working, and nothing checks whether the correction was understood.
- Practice with a tutor built in: StudyLah. Practice that teaches: Lah talks your child through the exact question they got wrong, out loud, and it comes back later with new numbers.
How is StudyLah different from other online maths help?
It teaches at the moment of the mistake, every day, for less than one hour of tuition a month. A live tutor explains once a week; a question-bank app marks and moves on.
When your child gets a question wrong, Lah, the tutor built into StudyLah, explains it out loud, in a real voice, step by step: she lights up the numbers she means, draws the bar model, and chalks the angle or the side on the figure, the way a teacher does at the whiteboard. Every wrong answer then goes into the mistake book, and Retry Mistakes brings it back rebuilt with new numbers until your child has really got it.
- It adapts to your child. Each day's questions are picked from your child's weak spots and nearly-there topics, at a difficulty that moves with them, rather than a chapter list worked through from the top.
- Built so children come back on their own. Lah reacts to every answer, a streak grows for showing up, a spark lights up for answers right in a row, and new looks for Lah are earned by practising. It feels like a game, and it is real maths.
- You can see whether it is working. The parent dashboard, free on every plan: time spent, accuracy, every topic from new to mastered, an Achievement Level on every P5 and P6 paper (a Band for P1 to P4), and every mistake with its solution.
Lah's walkthroughs, the hints and the worked solutions are on every plan, the free one included. Premium (S$34.90 a month) adds unlimited practice, every exam paper and Retry Mistakes, and a family new to it can try it free for 14 days.
Does online maths tuition work?
It can, when it is short, regular and tied to what school is teaching. A large review of the research, the Education Endowment Foundation's toolkit, finds one-to-one tuition works about as well with technology as in person.
| Approach | Extra progress in a year | In primary schools |
|---|---|---|
| One-to-one tuition | +5 months7 | +6 months7 |
| Small-group tuition (2 to 5 children) | +4 months8 | +4 months8 |
| Feedback on a child's own work | +6 months9 | +7 months9 |
Two findings matter for maths. Tuition's gains in maths are smaller than its average (+2 months for one to one, +3 months for a small group). And feedback on a child's own work gives at least as much progress as tuition, at very low cost: +6 months on average. That is the job StudyLah does every day: feedback on your child's own answer, explained.
What worked best for one-to-one tuition was short and often: about 30 minutes, 3 to 5 times a week, for up to 10 weeks, linked to the child's lessons in school.
Is online tuition cheaper than face-to-face tuition?
Not for one to one: agencies charge the same per hour online as at home. A group class costs less, and StudyLah costs the least.
| Kind of help | What it costs (P4 to P6) |
|---|---|
| Live tutor, online or at home | S$30 to S$90 an hour, S$180 to S$540 a month1–5 |
| Live online group class | about S$200 a month (one provider)6 |
| Tuition centre class | S$135 to S$330 a month10–14 |
| StudyLah, a tutor built in | S$0 on the free plan, S$34.90 a month for Premium |
A month assumes one 1.5-hour lesson a week. The cost page has every rate and where it comes from.
What should I ask before paying for online tuition?
- Who will teach my child? A student, a full-time tutor, or a current or former MOE teacher. It changes the price more than anything else. A current MOE teacher needs MOE's approval to give paid tuition.15
- Does it follow my child's school term? A good tutor or class teaches what school is teaching now, so the lesson and the classroom help each other.
- Can we try one lesson first? Watch how your child takes to a screen lesson before you pay for a term.
- How will I see progress? Ask what you will get after each lesson: the topics covered, what went wrong, what to practise.
- For a centre: is it registered with MOE? Centres teaching 10 or more students must register with MOE. A tutor teaching at home does not.16
Questions parents ask
Is online tuition effective for primary school children?
It can be. Research reviews find one-to-one tuition works about as well with technology as in person, as long as lessons are regular and linked to what school is teaching.
Should I choose online tuition or a maths practice app?
It depends on the problem. A topic your child has never understood needs a teacher. A topic they understand but keep slipping on needs daily practice with feedback. StudyLah gives both halves of that feedback: the mark, and Lah explaining the step out loud.
Is StudyLah a live tutor?
No person is on the call. Lah is the tutor built into StudyLah: when your child gets a question wrong, she talks the solution through out loud, step by step, on that question, at any hour, as often as your child needs.
How long should an online maths lesson be?
Shorter than most parents expect. In the research, one-to-one tuition worked best in sessions of about 30 minutes, 3 to 5 times a week. A weekly 1.5-hour lesson is usual in Singapore, so add short practice on the other days.
Which is the best online maths tuition?
The one that fixes your child's actual gap. A topic never understood needs a live teacher; a topic understood but slipping needs daily practice with each mistake explained. Before paying, ask who teaches, whether lessons follow the school term, and how you will see progress.
How much does an online maths tutor cost?
The same as a home visit: S$30 to S$90 an hour for P4 to P6, or S$180 to S$540 a month at one 1.5-hour lesson a week, depending on who teaches. A live group class online costs about S$200 a month at one provider.
Is there free online maths tuition for primary school?
Yes. StudyLah's free plan gives your child daily practice with Lah, the tutor built in, who explains each wrong answer out loud, step by step, at no cost and with no card. For live lessons, CDAC, SINDA and MENDAKI run free or low-cost tuition for families who meet their income criteria.
Is online tuition cheaper than home tuition?
Not one to one: agencies charge the same per hour. A live group class costs less, and StudyLah costs the least.

Now the practice has to happen.
These guides tell you what usually goes wrong. Your child's own practice tells you what's going wrong for them. StudyLah does the second part, and shows you the answer.
