How much does a home tutor charge per hour?

It depends mostly on who teaches. A university student tutoring part-time charges the least, a full-time tutor more, and a current or former MOE teacher the most, about double a part-time tutor. Rates also rise from P1 to P3 to P4 to P6 at 4 of the 5 agencies.

How is StudyLah different from tuition?

StudyLah is daily maths practice with a tutor built in, for less than one hour of home tuition a month. A tutor teaches once a week; StudyLah is there every day in between, and explains a wrong answer the moment it happens.

When your child gets a question wrong, Lah, the tutor built into StudyLah, explains it out loud, in a real voice, step by step: she lights up the numbers she means, draws the bar model, and chalks the angle or the side on the figure, the way a teacher does at the whiteboard. Every wrong answer then goes into the mistake book, and Retry Mistakes brings it back rebuilt with new numbers until your child has really got it.

Lah on a real question: she says each step out loud and writes it on the card as she goes. Your child can replay any step.
  1. A rating like the one used in chess. Each topic's mastery only rises when your child handles harder questions, so "strong" means strong, not just busy.
  2. As hard as the real exam. Every question is written to the standard of the real PSLE and top-school papers, never a gentler version that flatters the score, checked before it is published, and developed with input from Singapore tutors, including former MOE teachers.
  3. A report in your inbox every Sunday. A short email each Sunday evening: what your child practised that week, how it went, and what to work on next. Free on every plan.

What does a month of tuition cost?

Most families book one lesson a week. At 4 lessons of 1.5 hours a month, the hourly rates above come to this. Lessons of 2 hours cost a third more.

The centres here publish their primary maths fee for 4 lessons a month, of 1.5 or 2 hours. Some charge extras on top: one asks S$50 to register and a S$250 refundable deposit.

What changes the price?

  • Who teaches. A current or former MOE teacher costs about double a part-time tutor.
  • The level. P4 to P6 costs more than P1 to P3 at 4 of the 5 agencies.
  • Lesson length. A 2-hour lesson costs a third more than 1.5 hours. Many centres teach for 2 hours.
  • Group size. A centre class shares one teacher among several children, so it costs less per hour than a home tutor.
  • Extras. Registration fees, deposits, materials and holiday crash courses are usually charged on top.

How much do Singapore families spend on tuition?

The average Singapore household spends S$104.80 a month on private tuition, up from S$88.40 in 2017/18. That is the Department of Statistics' latest Household Expenditure Survey (2023).

HouseholdsTuition a month
All households, home tuitionS$45.4011
All households, tuition centresS$59.4011
All households, in totalS$104.8011
Lowest-income fifthS$36.3011
Highest-income fifthS$162.6011

These are averages over every household, including those with no child in school. One weekly maths lesson costs more than this on its own.

Are there cheaper or free options?

Yes, and some are free. Check these before you book a tutor.

  1. Ask the school first. Primary schools run extra support for children who need it, such as the Learning Support Programme. MOE also funds subsidised tuition for lower-income families through the Collaborative Tuition Programme.12
  2. Try the self-help groups. CDAC's Tuition Programme is free for eligible families (for 2027: household income up to S$5,300 a month, or S$2,000 per person). SINDA's STEP charges a S$10 flat fee, waived at S$1,600 or less per person. MENDAKI's Achievement Programme has no registration fee from 2026.13–15
  3. Choose a centre class over a home tutor. A small group usually costs less: S$135 to S$330 a month at the centres we read, against S$180 or more for a home tutor at P4 to P6.6–10
  4. Practise at home, with feedback. Research across many countries finds that feedback on a child's own work is one of the cheapest ways to raise results. Practice with a tutor built in gives that feedback every day, between lessons.16
