Maths assessment books and worksheets: how to choose and use them

The short version

Pick an assessment book for the job it does, not for its cover. Use a topical book while a topic is taught, practice papers in the weeks before a WA or exam, and a problem sums book from P4. Mark the work the same day, and have your child redo what went wrong a week later. StudyLah does the marking and the explaining for you: Lah talks a wrong answer through out loud, and on Premium it comes back with new numbers.

Which kind of assessment book does my child need?

Assessment books come in four kinds, and each does one job well. Most children need two at a time, never four.

Kind of bookWhat is insideWhen it helps
Topical practiceOne topic at a time, from easy to hardWhile school is teaching that topic
Practice papersFull papers in the exam format, to do timedThe 3 to 4 weeks before a WA or exam
Problem sumsWord problems and the methods behind them: models, units, working backwardsFrom P4, once a week
Mental sumsShort drills done without a calculatorTen minutes on most days, as PSLE Paper 1 has no calculator

What can StudyLah do that an assessment book or worksheet cannot?

A good book or worksheet does a lot, but it is printed, so three things are out of its reach: it cannot mark your child's answer the moment it is written, it cannot explain why their own line went wrong, and a redo uses the same numbers, so your child may remember the answer rather than solve it.

StudyLah does all three. When your child gets a question wrong, Lah, the tutor built into StudyLah, explains it out loud, in a real voice, step by step: she lights up the numbers she means, draws the bar model, and chalks the angle or the side on the figure, the way a teacher does at the whiteboard. Every wrong answer then goes into the mistake book, and Retry Mistakes brings it back rebuilt with new numbers until your child has really got it.

Lah on a real question: she says each step out loud and writes it on the card as she goes. Your child can replay any step.

Plenty of families use all three. StudyLah is the practice layer that finally tells you how it is going.

  1. Mistakes practised until they are understood. Every wrong answer goes into the mistake book, sorted by topic and by whether it was a careless slip or something still being learned. Retry Mistakes brings it back rebuilt, with a new story and new numbers, as many times as it takes, so you can see your child really understood rather than just read the correction.
  2. It follows your child's school. Set which topics the school teaches in each term, and the practice and the Weighted Assessments follow it, so the week's practice matches the week's lessons.
  3. Built so children come back on their own. Lah reacts to every answer, a streak grows for showing up, a spark lights up for answers right in a row, and new looks for Lah are earned by practising. It feels like a game, and it is real maths.

Use the book or worksheet for the page in front of your child, and StudyLah for the minutes after it: the marking, the explaining, and the redo.

Lah's walkthroughs, the hints and the worked solutions are on every plan, the free one included. Premium (S$34.90 a month) adds unlimited practice, every exam paper and Retry Mistakes, and a family new to it can try it free for 14 days.

Which book should my child use each term?

Match the book to what school is doing. A topical book follows the topic being taught. Practice papers come in before each Weighted Assessment (WA) and the end-of-year exam. Problem sums build from P4, and P6 turns to prelim and PSLE-style papers. The plan at the top of this page shows it term by term.

To see which topics each term covers at your child's level, open their syllabus page.

  1. P3 maths, every topic by term. Primary 3 syllabus
  2. P4 maths, every topic by term. Primary 4 syllabus
  3. P5 maths, every topic by term. Primary 5 syllabus
  4. P6 maths, every topic by term. Primary 6 syllabus

How do I choose a good assessment book?

  • It follows the latest (2026) MOE syllabus. Check the edition on the cover. An old edition can teach topics that have moved levels.
  • The answers show the working. An answer key with only final answers cannot tell your child where a sum went wrong.
  • It is at your child's level, not above it. A book a level up builds worry, not skill.
  • It starts easy. A child who gets the first page right keeps going. Hard questions belong at the end of each chapter.
  • It is short enough to finish. A thin book done twice beats a thick one abandoned in March.

How do I mark an assessment book without a fight?

  1. Mark it the same day. Feedback works best while your child still remembers their thinking. In the research, feedback on a child's own work adds +6 months of progress a year, more than tuition.1
  2. Mark the working, not just the answer. Find the line where it went wrong. That line is what to fix.
  3. Circle, do not correct. Let your child find the mistake in the circled line. Writing the answer for them teaches nothing.
  4. Redo it a week later. A sum done right once is not learned yet. The same kind of question, a week on, shows whether it stuck.
  5. Keep a short mistake list. Note the topic of every wrong answer. After a month, the list tells you what to practise next.

Where can I get free maths worksheets?

  1. A free exam paper for each level, P1 to P6. A paper in the end-of-year exam format, done on screen, with answers and a worked solution for every question. Free maths exam papers
  2. Quick questions on every topic. Each topic page has a few quick questions to try, with the answers. Maths topics, P1 to P6

Questions parents ask

What is the best maths assessment book in Singapore?

There is no single best one: the best is the one that fits the term and the job. A topical book while each topic is taught, a practice-paper book before each WA and exam, and from P4 a problem sums book once a week. Check the edition follows the current syllabus and the answers show the working.

Which maths assessment book is good for P1 and P2?

A topical book that follows what school is teaching, a few pages a week, marked together the same day. P1 and P2 have no exams or Weighted Assessments, so practice papers can wait: the job now is number sense and a liking for maths.

When WAs and exams happen

Which maths assessment books does my child need in P3 and P4?

Follow the school term. P3: Term 1, topical practice; Term 2, topical practice and WA papers; Term 3, topical practice and WA papers; Term 4, exam papers. P4: Term 1, topical practice; Term 2, topical practice and WA papers; Term 3, problem sums and WA papers; Term 4, exam papers. Two books at a time is plenty.

Which maths assessment books does my child need in P5 and P6, for the PSLE?

P5: Term 1, topical practice; Term 2, topical practice and WA papers; Term 3, problem sums and WA papers; Term 4, exam papers. P6: Term 1, topical practice and problem sums; Term 2, problem sums and WA papers; Term 3, exam papers; Term 4, exam papers. In P6, do the papers timed, and Paper 1 without a calculator, as in the PSLE.

The PSLE Maths paper format

Are assessment books necessary?

No. School worksheets and homework cover the syllabus. A book helps when it does a job school does not: more practice on a topic that is slipping, or timed papers before an exam. Mark it the same day, or it teaches little.

How many assessment books does my child need?

Two at a time is plenty: one topical book for what school is teaching, and one of practice papers or problem sums. Finishing two beats starting five.

Where can I find free primary maths worksheets in Singapore?

StudyLah has a free maths exam paper for each level, P1 to P6, with answers and a worked solution for every question, and every topic page has quick questions with their answers.
